Totally Connected Classroom

While I was checking out my Diigo library in bed one morning (killing time before I really have to get my day started), I found this blog post about a truly connected Kindergarten classroom. This teacher uses her smartphone, Facebook and FaceTime to keep parents apprised of their students' activities throughout the day. Wile I think that is really cool, I also wonder how she can possibly dedicate enough time to teaching her students while also managing all these updates. I Do Not Like to Write (Reflection via Web 2.0)

I think one of the biggest things I've taken away from this class is that literacy can easily be integrated with technology.  Not only can it easily be integrated, but it can also make learning and assessing fun!  I know it sounds too good to be true, but realistically, any time you give kids the opportunity to do their work in a way that they consider out-of-the-ordinary, they are more interested and engaged, both of which lead to increased motivation.

I started to integrate my EDU 584 reflection with Go Animate, a program that gives voice to text and allows for freedom of creativity.  The only problem was, there's a limit to how many speech exchanges you can have, and I quickly ran out of room!  The point is, I learned A LOT.  I plan on using most of what I learned frequently, and I plan on keeping up with my RSS feed because every day new technology is added and gives me new ideas on what I could do with my class.

Google Tries to Get Game (Reflection 2.0)

I have to give Google credit for trying something new, but even after using this product, I'm not sure how I feel about it.

What product am I talking about?  Google Story Builder. At first, it seemed like it was being advertised as a digital storytelling product but when I opened it to see what it was like, it was actually nothing like PhotoStory or Animoto and any other product like that.  There are no graphics.  You don't get to import your own music.  It's just text set to preloaded, Google-provided music.  

They (Google) call it collaboration.  I'm not sure I see the collaborative part.  They call it a story builder.  I'm not sure I see that.  Maybe I'm just not understanding their intention.  Even Educational Technology and Mobile Learning seems to talk about the product as more than what I've found (that's where I found the link to this particular program).  They claim that the product "allows you to create mini-movies or video stories with the feel of Google Docs. You can also personalize the videos you create using the characters, story, and even music of your choosing and when you  finish you can share your final product with others".  Mini-movies?  Video stories?  If you figure out what they mean by that, can you please let me know?  Because quite frankly, I'm confused.

iMovie Makes iMagic

I don't have any experience using iMovie but I found a link that might be useful to people who do.  Educational Technology and Mobile Learning posted about "6 Ways to Enhance Students' Learning Using iMovie".

Among the uses we are most familiar with was digital storytelling.  The post also mentions using iMovie to create visual reports, book reports/trailers, and use it to provide students with out-of-class trips (like an in-class field trip).

While I mentioned previously that I didn't use iMovie, I'm sure I could use PhotoStory to do any of the above-mentioned activities too.

Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery


So I've done it.  I've gone and created a digital story that I will use to introduce Lewis and Clark's exploration of the Louisiana Purchase and beyond to my students.  Because I have students who are English Language Learners and students who struggle with comprehension, I will use this video to give my students a preview of Lewis and Clark's journey.  This will give them an idea of the basic timeline of the journey so that when we start reading and researching the Corps of Discovery, students will have a beginning understanding.

There's An App for That!

As many of you know, I've been using KidBlog in my classroom for a little while now.  My kids are enthusiastic about writing and they love going to the lab to write about the most mundane things that they wouldn't even dream about writing about in the classroom.  While I know that eventually I'm going to have to make them write more interesting things in their blogs, I can't help but relish in the simple fact that as of right now, many of my more reluctant writers are having a great time writing!

As we lined up to go to the lab today, one my kids share with me the fact that there's an app for KidBlog.  As far as I can tell, it's only available on Apple devices, but I hope they'll make it available for Android devices soon since so many of my students have e-readers/tablets like the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet. Many of my students were really excited to hear about the app for KidBlog and I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to be moderating even more comments and posts than I already am.

And guess what?  I'm really excited about that.  My students are becoming digital citizens right before my very eyes!

Making the Common Core EASIER!!!

If you're like me, you're looking for ways to make working with the new Common Core State Standards easier.  The Educational Technology and Mobile Learning site recently compiled a list of "10 Wonderful Common Core Standards Cheat Sheets" and while I only checked out one of the sites, I found the one I did look at immediately useful.

The Common Core Checklists site organizes the checklists by grade level.  Each grade level is then organized by Common Core subject.  Each checklist provides a place for you to record when you taught a particular skill, when you retaught it, when you assessed, reassessed, and when you reviewed it.  That way you're not sitting at your desk reading through assessments, scratching your head, and asking yourself, "I did teach this, didn't I?"  At least with these checklists you can be certain of whether or not you taught something.


I immediately looked at the E/LA Common Core Standards for Writing checklist for grade 5.  It gave separate checklists for each type of writing and was very user friendly.  I'd highly recommend it.

I'd also highly recommend checking out the other cheat sheets Educational Technology and Mobile Learning provides.  You'll probably find something to meet your specific needs!

The Road to Digital Literacy

If you have not yet subscribed to Educational Technology and Mobile Learning, you really should. I would estimate that about half my posts are related to something I found that website.  The most current interesting thing I found is an "infographic" titled "The Road to Digital Literacy".  Infographic is a term I just learned that pretty much means picture that shows information, sometimes a lot of information, sometimes a little information, but all the time, the information is presented in a format that is way more interesting to look at than just reading a piece of text.

But anyway, here's the infographic that can be used with students to explain how to be a good digital citizen.    I think it's easy to understand and easy to follow, and it's especially important because of the amount of time students spend working with technology to meet the Common Core Standards and the NETS for students.


Get Your Great Images Here...for Free!

Ever send your students off to search for pictures of people or time periods and worry about what they might find?  Every time I allow my kids to search for images, I worry about what might pop up because they spelled something incorrectly or used just the right words to find something completely inappropriate.  One solution to this problem might be Google LIFE Photo Archive.  This photo archive is hosted by Google but includes thousands of amazing pictures from LIFE.  The images are sorted by events, famous people, cultures, time periods, and other different ways that make perusing the images interesting and easy.

I think this archive is especially useful for history projects since the way the pictures are archived lends itself nicely to that (there is a huge archive of Civil War photos that would have been super handy when I was working on my animoto).  There are a wealth of images though, so students would easily be able to create digital stories, presentations, or other projects with many quality images.

This is a great resource for safe image searching for kids.  Google also mentions that you can amend any Google image search by typing "computer source:life" after the search. The computer will then only retrieve images from the LIFE database.

Tempting Ways to Teach Typing

If we are going to get our kids to be successful writers in today's digital age, we have to teach them how to type.  Interestingly enough, this doesn't seem to be a priority in my district which drives me nuts!  My students are required to take writing tests on the computer, and I am required to integrate technology into my classroom, yet the district makes no effort to give us a typing program at the elementary level that would help our students be more successful.

That leaves teachers to find their own typing programs that students can use to become better typists so they can focus less on typing and more on putting their ideas down on screen. While I haven't yet found a free program that saves students' progress, I have found a program and a game that encourage typing skills by making them fun.

Dance Mat Typing is a program put out by BBC.  The goat that teaches typing (yes, goat) starts by helping students become familiar with home row so they can actually type without looking.  He's got a British accent (since it's put out by BBC) which makes it funny for my students and he moves through different exercises that are supposed to help them type.  Unfortunately, the program doesn't save their progress, although I guess that can also be a benefit because then students can go back to lessons they'd like to try again.

There are also many games that students can play once they are familiar with the location of the keys on a keyboard.  One program called TypingRocket I found on Free Technology for Teachers page.   It's got catchy music and is meant to be entertaining so students will want to practice.  I know there are other sites out there that allow students to practice keyboarding in interesting ways, and I'm always open to suggestions.

Creative Classroom Management

Lately I've come across a couple sites that teachers can use to keep track of/manage student behavior.  They're interesting ways to keep students on task and to report to parents about student behavior without completing any extra paperwork!

The first site is called Class Dojo.  Using Class Dojo, teachers can set up their classrooms (you can have multiple classrooms in case you teach more than one group of students) and award students points for positive or negative behaviors.  It comes with many different behaviors already, but it also leaves room for you to edit behaviors so you can keep track of the specific things you want your students doing.  The program is web-based so you don't have to download it, and if you'd like students to see how they are doing, you can keep it projected on a screen.  If you don't want to project it or cannot report back to your computer frequently, there is an app for the iPad/iPhone and there are also directions on how to use it with your Android device.  The best part about using Class Dojo is that you can print out students' daily or weekly results if you'd like to send them home.  You can also give parents AND students their own login information so they can check behavior from home.  It's a great way to keep parents informed about how their students are doing without creating piles of paperwork! Another program that teachers can use to manage classroom behavior is Class Charts.  Class Charts works much like Class Dojo does; there is a screen that shows the names of all students in your current class.  You can assign each student points for positive behaviors or remove points for negative behaviors.  Class Charts has a few additional features that include keeping track of reading levels, put them in groups, and a few other management tools.  Like Class Dojo, Class Charts has parent logins so parents can check up on their students' behaviors, but it does not have a student login portal.  

Both sites seem like good resources for a teacher who would like an simple way to keep track of student behavior.  It's up to the teacher to choose which one they would prefer (I cannot even tell which one I like better, although I'm leaning towards Class Dojo--I like the student avatars better).

Lewis and Clark Explore the Great Unknown

I'm doing my digital story on Lewis and Clark, a unit that is coming up shortly in our school.  I've got a lot of work to do, including narration, adding pictures, and possibly adding music, but here's a sneak peek of what it looks like so far...


I plan on showing the finished video as a prelude to all the reading and learning students will be doing.  I think this is especially important because I have a few ELL students and several students who struggle with reading comprehension.  Watching this video prior to reading texts about Lewis and Clark will hopefully give them some much needed background knowledge that will assist in their comprehension.

Concerned About Copyright?

Copyright laws and guidelines are tricky, especially with the internet.  With everything we are doing, especially for our class, I thought these guidelines might come in handy.  Just for the record, I found it on the Educational Technology and Mobile Learning site.  It's called the Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers.

Taxonomy for Technology

We've all seen Bloom's Taxonomy.  It's not anything new, especially to educators who are fresh out of college.  It's always nice to see things in a different way however, say, in a peacock shape...

It's not that Bloom's ideas are no longer relevant.  It's simply that they need an update.  We already know all the "buzz words" that are used by Bloom, but how do they apply to our classroom these days when we're working to use technology in our classroom?

The website Educational Technology and Mobile Learning has found the key to integrating Bloom's Taxonomy with the internet.  The product?  A peacock-shaped image much like the one above that no longer includes all the taxonomy "buzz words"; instead the peacock is filled with technological tools that we can use to help our students meet the demands of the Common Core State Standards.

Pretty Pretty Please??

I spend a lot of time in my math class begging my students to practice their math facts.  As we all know, fact fluency is crucial as students learn more complex math skills; they can't waste a ton of time figuring out what 7 x 8 is when they're supposed to be doing something way more complex.  There are plenty of great non-technological ways for students to practice math facts, and there are even plenty of ways that involve technology.  Our school pays tons of money (I'm sure) for subscriptions to Scholastic's Fasttmath program, and that program isn't even any fun!

Introducing Sumdog!!  One of my teaching partners found this site, and there's a free version and a pay version.  The free version is still pretty awesome though.  Parents can register their kids, or teachers can register their entire classes!  On Sumdog, students can practice fact fluency through games (and they're fun games, trust me, I've played).  They can also practice skills like working with money, fractions, and algebra.  Teachers can set what skills they want each individual student to practice and students. They can compete against their classmates in these games, and teachers can set up tournaments that encourage students to play!  Sumdog is actually really easy to use, and I would highly recommend it, especially to schools where money for fun computer programs is not really available.

I couldn't find any official Sumdog videos, but what I did find when I was searching YouTube was that tons of kids have posted videos they've created on using the program.  One of the kids (Jake--first video below) admitted that he didn't think the program was going to be fun, but he actually enjoyed it.  The videos give you some ideas of what games your students might see and how the program works.

Web 2.what?

So I was visiting my classmate Stephanie's blog, Running on Empty, and she mentioned that up until recently, she didn't know what Web 2.0 meant.  Turns out, I'm not the one one!  I just kinda rolled with it and figured that the 2.0 simply meant "ONE MILLION TOOLS THAT YOU CAN USE ON THE INTERNET".  Turns out that is kind of what it means, but it also means tools that you can use to interact through the internet.  Please enjoy this video that Stephanie turned me on to. It explains simply what Web 2.0 means. If you watch the whole thing, it has a Spice Girls song at the end (I knew that would get you interested!)

Go Go Gadget Glogster!

Glogster.  It meets the needs of many of the needs of NETS•S.  It's fun, it allows students to organize a variety of medias and information in a way that is creative and interesting.  It's complex enough to allow for differentiation in the way it is used, and it would allow students who have worked collaboratively to collect information to present the information in a way that showcases their hard work.  


I have experimented with Glogster twice.  I haven't found it incredibly user-friendly, but I'm still working on it.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong.  Either way, it can never hurt to watch a video that shows users the different features of Glogster, so be sure to check out the video below.

You Need It? They've Got It!

Ah...a webpage that has it all...especially The 22 Digital Skills Every 21st Century Teacher MUST HAVE!  The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) 
require teachers to "update" their teaching.  If we don't, we won't be any help in getting our students to meet the Common Core State Standards.

So the webpage I found lists the 22 Digital Skills Every 21st Century Teacher MUST HAVE! (click here if you somehow missed the first link...possibly you were worried about the mass amounts of snow on the way...)  And then it not only lists the skills we should have but also the tools we should use to practice those skills!  Possibly many of the tools are tools you might already be using!

Here are the skills in the nutshell (there's 22, so it's pretty big nutshell)...
Teachers should be able to:
1.  Create and edit audio
2.  Use social bookmarking to share resources with and between learners
3.  Use blogs and wikis to create online platforms for students
4.  Use digital images in the classroom
5.  Use video content to engage students
6.  Use infographics to visually stimulate students
7.  Use social networking sites to connect with colleagues and grow professionally
8.  Create and deliver asynchronous (what??) presentations and training sessions
9.  Compile a digital e-portfolio for their own development
10.  Be able to detect plagiarized works in students' assignments
11.  Create screen capture videos and tutorials
12.  Use and provide students with task management tools to organize their work and plan their learning
13.  Use polling software to create a real-time survey in class
14.  Understand issues related to copyright and fair use of online materials
15.  Use digital assessment tools to create quizzes
16.  Use digital tools for time management purposes
17.  Use note taking tools to share interesting content with your students
18.  Annotate web pages and highlight parts of text to share with your class
19.  Use online sticky notes to capture interesting ideas
20.  Use file sharing tools to share docs and files with students online
21.  Create engaging mind maps
22.  Leverage the power of digital storytelling in your classroom

Shenanigans on iPads!

Tonight I was checking out another interesting link that I thought might introduce me to some new amazing technology that I cannot live without.  I'm learning a lot in my technology course right now, and I guess I figure that if I can learn even more through my RSS feed, I would be able to really find tools that I LOVE.  

This link was to a page for The Top 10 Articles for Last Month off the Educational Technology and Mobile Learning page, and I've found some really useful tools and sites there in the past.  Much to my disappointment, however, many of the pages or tools that were listed in the top 10 were for iPads!  This keeps happening to me again and again, and quite frankly, it's giving me a complex.

I don't have an iPad; they're crazy expensive!  My district doesn't plan on giving me an iPad (elementary classrooms won't benefit from them--their words, not mine).  I want more tools that don't need an iPad!  (And more tools that are web-based since I don't have "administrator privileges" to install tools on my computer.)

Kid-Safe Searching

I don't know about you, but I'm always on the lookout for a search engine that will provide ONLY safe search results for my students.  I cannot stand over the shoulders of 23 kids to confirm that what they are looking at is appropriate, and I'm always concerned about exposing them to things they do not need to be exposed to.  I was therefore thrilled when one of Diigo's Daily Updates brought me a page called "Five Safe Search Engines for Kids".  I decided to check out these search engines to see how kid-friendly they were. 

The first search engine listed was Ask Kids.  I've used this engine before, and I have to say that out of the five, to me, this seems like the best choice.  Ask Kids has a kid-friendly appearance and draws the majority of its results from websites specifically for kids.  The only problem I've found with this is that when students are researching certain topics, if there are not enough kid-friendly websites with information on the topic, then there are few results.  Overall though, I found this search engine to be the most kid-friendly and the safest.

Searchy Pants, Mymunka, Kidzsearch, and KidRex are other search engines that are supposed to be specifically for kids.   They all appear to be powered by Google, though, and when students type in the topic they are looking for, many advertisements are in the results.  When I typed in the word "salmon", those four search engines brought back recipes, the names of school districts, and other unimportant, unrelated information about salmon (the fish).  Ask Kids did not bring back any of these search items.

This is not to say that Ask Kids is the only search engine that is worthwhile.  The other search engines are most likely very safe for kids. And they are also probably very helpful when looking for a lot of information about a particular topic.  But if you are looking for a good search engine for younger kids who have trouble assessing the validity of resources, Ask Kids would be a good choice.

Check out some other search engines for kids so you can decide which you like best!

Doing the Diigo

I've found Diigo to be a very useful tool for keeping my information straight for class.  I found it very easy to use when I was compiling images for my Animoto, and I've also found myself using it to tag sites for later perusal.  With Diigo, I don't have to worry about being able to find a site again later among my millions of bookmarks; instead I can tag it so that its topic shows.  When I set out to look for that great site on Wikipedia, I can just check my Diigo tags to find the one I was looking for.

My classmate (and awesome sister-in-law) Ann (visit her blog here) shared a video on how to use some of the more detailed features of Diigo.  Up to this point, I've been using it merely to tag sites or save them to read later.  Watching the video made me want to try out the highlighting, inserting shapes, and screen capturing features which are actually really easy to use...for the most part.  I had some difficulty figuring out how to save what I was doing; for some reason, the save icon was not working for me, so I'm going to continue playing around with that.
While I will most likely not have my students create Diigo accounts, having a classroom account would be useful for times when I want my students to visit particular pages.  Instead of having them type in the frequently rather cumbersome URLs, I can have them visit the Diigo page and click on the link there.  I could make folders that the students could access with appropriate websites that were relevant to what we were doing as a class.  This seems like a great elementary use for Diigo since I know from experience that giving kids a URL to type in usually turns out fairly unsuccessful for about half the class.

I haven't created a class Diigo yet, but I already know it's going to have great application in my room.  I'm almost wondering if it would be better to just create a grade level one so that my teaching partners and I could add links and share them with each other as well.  Until then, you can check out my Diigo library (which is still in its beginning stages).

I've Created a Monster (or 22)!

Take a quick look at the number of comments on the right hand side of this picture.  Are you noticing practically a million comments?  I am.

Today I had my kids watch a video (see below) on nice ways to comment. Then I allowed them to comment on one another's blog posts (they only have one post so far...we're still learning).  They had a blast.  They were kind, they were excited, and their comments were appropriate and enthusiastic.  I explained to them that commenting was like having a conversation on the computer which caused many of them to start replying to the comments others had left for them.

It's all fine up to there.  But then they were begging (literally begging) to blog from home.  What could it hurt?  So I said yes.  Actually I said, "If you want to share ONE interesting thing that happens to you over the weekend on your blog, you may.  And if you want to comment, you may".

I just checked my gmail.  I had 53 (53!!) comments to moderate.  I'm excited that they're excited.

But I'm also afraid I've just created 22 blog monsters!

Real Binders Drive Me CRAZY!

According to the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for Teachers, one of my goals as a teacher is to engage in professional growth and leadership.  As I follow all these RSS feeds about technology, I can't help but feel like I'm constantly engaging in professional growth.  When I see something that interests me, I click on it.  While at times this leads me to dead ends or useless information, I have been finding lots of great information and tools that I can use to help myself professionally.

My last post mentioned LiveBinders, a really useful tool for organizing information that teachers find for each area of their curriculum.  But another thing LiveBinders is great for is their public binders.  People have already created binders on a plethora of topics, and all I have to do is type in what I'm looking for and BAM!  Suddenly there's a binder (or several) waiting for me.  I typed in "Civil War" (which you might have noticed by now tends to be my topic of choice) and there were over 10 binders to look at, many of which had valuable and well-organized information that I could use when I teach that unit

Real binders drive me nuts.  I love technology.

Technologies I Cannot Live Without (So They Say--Whoever They Is...)

Today Google Reader showed me Edudemic's post, The 15 Education Technologies to Know About This Year.  Since it's now my job to keep in the know about these things, I decided to check it out.  There were some technologies that I'm currently aware of or using (Kidblog, StudyBlue, and Glogster) but there were also several other technologies that interested me.

Flashnotes
Flashnotes is a site that allows students to post the notes they take in class and get paid when other people use them!  How amazing is this??  I wish this had been around when I was a student, because I, quite frankly, was an amazing note taker.  Granted, this is not a useful program for my students in particular, but for students at the high school and college levels, this program could be really useful!

Another great technology is LiveBinders.  LiveBinders seems kind of like Diigo, but instead of simply tagging webpages, you can create entire binders dedicated to areas of your curriculum.  These binders can include webpages, videos, pdfs, and other technologies that you can then organize to your liking.  You can also share the binders, so it would be a great way to collaborate with other teachers in your building or district.  This program, like Flashnotes, does not seem like it will be used frequently in the elementary classroom, but if students are doing a large research project, it could come in handy. I thought I'd share these technologies even though they might not be appropriate for your elementary classroom.  Despite that, they would be great as teacher tools, and if you visit the Edudemic website, you can see the other technologies that you cannot live without this year.

The Life of a Civil War Soldier

I finally finished my Animoto project.  The Civil War is a really big unit in our school, and we take it very seriously.  Our goal is to help students understand to the best of their ability what life was like as a Civil War solider.  It will be great to show them this video as a preview to all the information that they learn.

In the process of creating this video, I found a few sites with great pictures of the war and used Diigo to help me keep the sites organized.  It actually worked out really well!

Exciting Times in the Blogosphere!

Today I gave my kids a math test and a reading test.  They worked really hard during their reading tests, and I could tell they needed something to do that didn't require them to sit quietly.  I wanted to give them some literacy task that they could enjoy and that would allow them to talk and think creatively, so I decided to introduce their kidblogs to them.  They were beyond thrilled.  They had a million questions (one of which was, "Can we put in pictures?"  What is it with them and pictures??) but they were also asking questions about if they were allowed to blog at home.  I could tell they were excited, so I showed them how they were going to post and lay down some simple guidelines for their first time.  All they were going to do was post.  Their topic was "My Favorite Book".  

I thought that once I gave them an actual topic to write about, they would realize that I was actually asking them to work.  They didn't!  Even better, most of the responses they wrote (or are still drafting...they had to be perfect) are better than their in-class work.  And they ended up working collaboratively to improve each other's blogs, because they were so excited to read each other's work that they were giving constructive feedback.  They were editing and revising others' blogs (kindly).  According to the National Educational Technology Standards for students and the Common Core, working collaboratively using technology is very important, so today, while my kids were having fun, I was actually meeting several standards....just because I started using a blog in my classroom!

So Apparently Now I'm Blogging for Fun...About StudyBlue

After playing around with Google Reader, I started subscribing to a few RSS feeds that might be applicable to my field.  I started by typing in education and found a few interesting feeds, and then I moved to educational technology.  That's where I hit the jackpot.  Free Technology for Teachers is a frequently updated and highly useful site that shares technology that is great for classrooms of all types and levels.  It's where I discovered StudyBlue, a super handy site where you can make flash cards for FREE and use them on your phone or computer!

One of the really cool aspects of StudyBlue is that often when you type in terms, other cards that have already been made are recommended to you, so you often don't even have to start from scratch.  The note cards can be accessed from phones or other computers, and the program can be accessed using a web browser, so it doesn't have to be downloaded (which is handy for elementary schools where you have to have administrative privileges to install anything on the computer).

The notecards can also be printed as a review sheet and the program keeps track of which cards you get correct so you only end up practicing the ones you need to practice.  This program has the potential to make reviewing and practicing tons of fun, even in the elementary classroom!
I cannot tell a lie...I'm addicted to RSS feeds.  I could never figure out what they were before, but now that I know how they work, why wouldn't anyone use one?  There's just one small problem.  Because I subscribe to news that interests me, it ALL interests me.  When I scroll through the stories, I have to check them all out, and I frequently end up starring multiple stories to return to a later time.

I'm really going to have to come up with a great tagging and organizing system.

As Richardson suggested, I chose Google Reader as my "aggregator" (new exciting word that to me means place where my millions of news stories come to land).  After I mucked my way through setting up Reader and subscribing, I thought I'd search for a video that would have been useful before all my hard work.  Of course I found one (see below).  It puts Reader's use into simple terms.



I understand Richardson's explanation about how useful RSS feeds would be in a classroom, but I cannot yet figure out how to use them effectively in the elementary classroom.  All the articles I found (Using RSS feeds in the ClassroomRSS Feeds and Using them in the Classroom) and the book mention having students use specific feeds for their research papers or using RSS feeds to keep track of my students' blogs.  At the elementary level, these applications don't seem practical.

The one thing that did seem like a good idea was using TeacherVision.com's RSS Feeds to bring fresh daily content to my classroom.  My students are benefiting from the RSS feeds, but they are still not using them actively.  I think that they'll do okay waiting to use feeds until they're a little older.

Helping Students Express Themselves Through Technology

Sometimes students need a little work with words.  Many times older students are so used to speaking without filtering their thoughts, and they simply say whatever comes into their minds.  I have several students this year who often speak without thinking.  Not only does that provide for some interesting blunders, but it's beginning to happen so frequently that other students come to expect the often irrelevant words coming out of these students' mouths.

In the past, in order to get my students to think before they speak and to say only what is important, I have given them the "10 words or less" task.  Sometimes I do this as review for tests and sometimes I do it just to check if they have an understanding of a particular concept.  The goal is for the student to create a sentence in just 10 (sometimes less) words that really showcases his/her understanding.


In the past, I have not done this with technology, but with my new-found learning of all the different ways teachers use video, picture, and blogging programs, I am quickly figuring out how to have my students practice thinking about the words they use while creating original works to express themselves.  Haiku Deck is an app for the ipad that allows students to create "souped up" PowerPoint slideshows.  They are more visually stimulating and require students to thoughtfully choose the words and picture for each slide.

Haiku Deck, along with Animoto (and other as-of-yet-undiscovered-by-me tools) could be adapted in ways that allow students to create review sessions for difficult topics. Students could also work collaboratively to create presentations that were thought-provoking and visually stimulating by incorporating music, pictures, and text of their choice.  The possibilities are endless!

E-Reader Technology in the Classroom

Reading books is slowly becoming a thing of the past.  As a book lover, this saddens me, but you can't stop technology, so even as much as I love the feel (and smell) of books, I too own an e-reader (two, even).  We need kids to read.  We need them to be successful at taking tests.  We need kids to read and test successfully on the computer.  To me, this translates into needing kids to do significant amounts of reading on devices.

Empowering Students With Digital Reading explores the topic of students reading via technology.  The article discusses a district library where digital books were made available to students and were used a significant number of times.  I can understand that; convenience is key these days, and books that are available electronically are often also available instantaneously.  No wait time!  The article delves into a few different e-reading programs that can be used in the classroom and discusses them as options to be used with students.  While I agree that using this technology is important, the article also discusses each program's "assessment tools".  Quite frankly, I think this is less important for students who simply need to read; if we require students who are reading digitally to complete assessments, we are going to take the fun out of reading and defeated the purpose of digitally available texts.

There are great reading apps for the ipad, and the Nook and Kindle are also very kid-friendly.  Even Scholastic has come out with an e-reader app that can be used on tablets (not the Nook or Kindle).  These are great ways to allow kids access to digital texts, but not in the way that I would like.  I would like to begin using e-readers in the classroom.  My teaching partners and I even began looking into the likelihood of being able to fund e-readers in our classrooms; unfortunately, the start-up cost is huge and purchasing digital books does not prove to be more cost effective in the classroom.  In fact, one would think that companies would have deals where a teacher could purchase one license for a book and use it on many devices, but when you use devices for education, each device is supposed to have its own copy of the book.  That's crazy when you consider that an individual can register up to six devices to one account!

We need to get our kids reading digitally.  That's where they're doing the majority of their reading anyway, and reading on a screen seems to hold their attention better than paper books.  In terms of the classroom, paper books take up inordinate amounts of space and only last so long with little hands tearing at them.  Digital books make sense.  Companies need to make them more reasonably priced for educators.  They need to make them more convenient for educators.

Animoto Makes it Interesting

Since I received my SMART Board last year, I've been trying to use it in an increasing variety of ways to engage my students.  I've scanned in picture books, created a few simple games, and streamed some videos to enhance their learning.  Most of the things I've done with my board, however, have not been created by me, but Animoto seems like a great solution.

I've always watched other people's videos and wondered how they created them.  Short of using a video camera or PowerPoint, how have they made their videos so interesting?  Animoto is a simple, user-friendly way to create videos for home or school, and I've learned that through watching others' videos, and easily creating my own.

Even the first educational Animoto video blew me away. It was a video about the Solar System created by a teacher who wanted to help her students review.  At the same time though, it inspired me.  It made me stop and think about my curriculum and how I could use it to help my students review info they'd already learned, or preview information they were going to learn.  I've already decided to use Animoto to create videos about Westward Expansion and the Civil War for my students.  The hardest part will be deciding what pictures to use, because it's really that easy to do.  In fact, I've already experimented with Animoto by creating a video of a Halloween party I attended.  Enjoy.

Wiki Wiki (Which Apparently Means "Quick") Who Knew?


I read the chapter on Wikis and had to check them out.  Of course I've looked at Wikipedia before but I've never actually tried to edit anything and I've always convinced my students that Wikipedia is the worst place ever to find information.  Now I'm not so sure.  I started out by checking out one of the links that I found in Will Richardson's book Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, Wikijunior.  I really like the idea of having a set of "books" that are published for younger children, sometimes published by children.  In fact, I found a topic that my students
have just completed some work on and found that they had information that could be added to the wiki.  If I knew how.  Wikijunior's editing does not seem as user-friendly as I thought it would be.

Because I'm a newbie at wikis, I went off to search for an alternative to Wikipedia and its friend (Wikijunior).  Wikispaces was another place that Richardson had mentioned, so I headed there in an effort to find something user-friendly and classroom-friendly.  Wikispaces seems like place.  It seems like the perfect place to allow my students to become published authors in an more academic format than using a blog.  I'm seriously considering the use of wikispaces to produce a class page of information regarding Westward Expansion and the Civil War (two of our biggest units in Social Studies).  I can already imagine how excited my students will be when they can view their work online and show it off to others.

Could I Be Anymore Ridiculous?

Why am I obsessed with winter weather?  Quite frankly, I am worse than a little kid when it comes to snow. When I suspect snow might start falling overnight, I am literally awake every hour on the hour looking out the window to see if flakes are falling.  Right now, I'm obsessively checking the Weather Channel website  to check if the forecast has changed.  And it has.  Many times, actually.  So many times that I'm actually worried about not having a delay tomorrow when this afternoon, I was positive that there would be.  I hope it snows.

Blogging in the Classroom

Reading about blogging was a little overwhelming.  It was certainly a lot to think about, especially after thinking about blogs I've created in the past.  Thinking about my blogs of the past, I thought at first that they had nothing to do with reflection or conversation.  I didn't consider organization, although I did consider my audience (I assumed it would be friends).  As I considered the blogs and compared them Richardson's definitions of blogs, I realized I wasn't really blogging at all; I was really keeping a journal in a very public way.  Blogs used in this fashion seemed to me to have no real use in the classroom.

So why then should I use blogs in my classroom?  To begin with, when students know they have an audience, their writing improves almost immediately.  I see that in my classroom as I watch some of my students who have chosen to write a classroom newspaper.  When I distributed the first edition, some of my more reluctant writers wanted to then publish their own newsletter.  Why?  Because they could work on the computer to publish it! Why else?  Because then other people would see all this hard work they put into something that interested them.  So blogging gives students the audience that many of them need as motivation.

Blogging is also an interesting way to have a "conversation".  Kids these days are more familiar with conversing through media, whether it be through some type of messaging, texting, or video chatting.  Having students comment on one another's blogs would be closer to the types of conversations they're actually having.

Finally, I should seriously consider using blogs in my classroom because both the Common Core State Standards and the National Council of Teachers of English support using technology for writing.  NCTE's 21st Century Literacies demand that students are proficient in use of technology, and both NCTE and CCSS discuss the use of technology to interact and collaborate with others. Technology Educational Standards

The International Society for Technology in Education has come up with a set of of National Educational Technology Standards for both students and teachers.  The technology standards for students (NETS•S) evaluate what students need to know to live and in a world that is becoming increasingly more global and digital.  These standards stress the importance of students communicating and collaborating by using technology.  The standards also mention that now more than ever students need to be able to think critically, research, analyze, and synthesize information, and use creativity to continue to get ahead in society.  

The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS•T) ask teachers to be among other leaders of the digital age to help students accomplish the aforementioned student standards. While many of our students may be more comfortable than us at experimenting with technology, as teachers, we are the ones who need to model how to effectively use technology in a global society.  To do this, we must utilize tools like blogs, classroom webpages, and other resources to engage students and facilitate collaboration not only between peers but also between our students and others  in the virtual world.  We should be using digital resources to not only inspire student learning but also to develop new learning experiences and assessments.  Based on what I now know about blogging, a classroom blog could accomplish many of our NETS goals.  A classroom blog could easily be used as a portal to communication with others outside of the classroom.  It could also be used as an assessment tool for reading, writing, or any other curriculum based topic.  I could also easily transform my classroom's current classroom newspaper into a digital newspaper using a blog.  The newspaper topics would require students to complete research, analyze, and synthesize information regarding current events outside of the classroom.  The newspaper would also require collaboration between peers as students planned which articles they would write.  Once the newspaper was written and published, students could invite other classrooms to view and comment on the paper to facilitate communication between those in the virtual world.  

There are many different ways that we as teachers can help our students become better digital learners.  We need to embrace technology and become digital learners ourselves to help inspire our students to do the same.
